How Would You Describe Courage?
Bold ⋅ Fearless ⋅ Strong ⋅ Forward Movement ⋅ Firmly Planted ⋅ Facing Fear ⋅ Doing it Afraid
Did the word “wait” come to your mind? How can waiting be a word that describes courage? Seems counterproductive and counterintuitive to me, and I would have never used waiting to describe courage until this Bible verse popped out at me during my study time:
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be Brave and courageous, yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14
What Exactly is Waiting?
Let’s step back for a moment and think about what waiting means. As defined by audioenglish.org waiting is a verb (action word) and it means to:
- Stay in one place and anticipate or expect something
- Wait before acting
- Look forward to the probable occurrence of
Why Waiting is Courageous and Brave?
Waiting on the Lord is an act of faith. And, to live in faith requires courage because faith is hoping for something not yet seen. It takes courage…a lot of courage to believe that which you cannot see.
“What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is evidence of things we cannot yet see.” Hebrews 11:1
Waiting is Challenging
For me, waiting is difficult. I am an action taker who wants to jump right in and take control. The thought of doing nothing and waiting is scary to me…it brings up feelings that I am not comfortable with…trusting God is difficult. I want to see and do. Not be still and wait. However, acting without God can be devastating and this is when courage is needed…courage to stand against my pride and courage to wait.
Often in life, I have witnessed God using waiting periods to grow my character, strengthen my faith and remove obstacles. Timing is everything. Waiting is active and here are a few key points about waiting:
- It takes self-discipline and self-control to wait. This is an opportunity to strengthen those muscles.
- God can refresh and restore in the waiting time.
- Waiting periods provide time to learn and grow; to be refined and to prepare us for what is coming.
- Seek God in the waiting. Just be with Him.
- As we wait on the Lord (stay still)…we can wait on Him (serve). Use this time to give, serve and help.
“The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him! The Lord is wonderfully good to those who wait for Him and seek Him. So, it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.” Lamentations 3:24-26
Waiting is Brave!
For people like me (control freaks who must take action) waiting takes courage and strength. God never ceases to surprise me with new lessons. Waiting is brave! Who knew?! God did! And once again, He kindly and gently showed me more about Himself.
Bravery, courage and faith this is the Chickening-In life. And that sometimes includes waiting.
