Can You Identify the Harmful Effects of Fear in Your Life?

If you had a pen and paper what harmful effects would you write down?  Would it include limits, robs, removes and sabotages?  These are some very powerful words!

“Fear is a self-imposed prison that will keep you from becoming what God intends you to be.”  Rick Warren

Don’t Underestimate Fear’s Harmful Effects

If you are human, you have felt fear.  And I am no exception.  Fear has made its claim in my life many times, and every time I have listened to what it was telling me, the effects were hurtful to my faith and living my best life.  Fear has caused me NOT to take action when I needed to, to live without joy and to stay stuck in a bad situation.  Here are 4 key areas to consider.

4 Harmful Effects of Fear

1. Places Limitations

Fear places limitations on my life.  It restricts me from taking an action that I really want to take. Or, it can keep me from stopping a behavior I really want to let go.  Either way, fear limits my potential to be the best person I can be.

“Be strong and courageous, and do the work.  Don’t be afraid or discouraged by the size of the task in front of you, for the Lord God, my God, is with you.”  I Chronicles 28:20

2. Robs and Steals

Fear is like a thief.  It robs and steals all that is good and replaces it with doubt, indecision and paralysis.  One way I notice fear’s harm is when my joy level shrinks, and that is because joy and fear are in direct opposition with each other. Fear steals joy!

“Fear will steal your joy and your enthusiasm.  Focus on faith; let God deal with your fear.” Joel Osteen

3.  Casts a Shadow on Hope

Fear casts a shadow over my sense of hope just like an enormous redwood tree overshadows a small pine tree.  Hope, excitement and adventure decrease and seem to vanish. I cave into the fear…it appears much bigger than it really is.

“Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space.  Invite one to stay.”  Maya Angelou

4. Sabotages

Fear deliberately sets itself up against my success.  It undermines my aspirations with doubt, worry and what ifs. My thoughts become so over-loaded with worry that defeating the fear is unlikely.

“Worry is a cycle of insufficient whirling around a center of fear.”  Corrie Ten Boom
